Platysuchus was named by Westphal (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: J Plie Sepkoski's reference number: 620]. Its type is Platysuchus multicrobiculatus.

It was assigned to Crocodilia by Sepkoski (2002); to Thalattosuchia by Bronzati et al. (2012); to Teleosauridae by Carroll (1988), Pierce et al. (2009), Young (2013); and to Teleosaurinae by Young et al. (2024).
