Taxonomy

Pleurosaurus was named by Meyer [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It was considered monophyletic by Rauhut et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Pleurosauri by Fitzinger (1843); to Dactylopodes by Meyer (1845); to Crocodilidae by d'Orbigny (1849); to Sphenodontidae by Lortet (1892); to Spheodontia by Sepkoski (2002); to Pleurosauridae by Rauhut et al. (2012); and to Pleurosauridae by Osborn (1903), Cocude-Michel (1963), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988), Herrera-Flores et al. (2018), Hsiou et al. (2019).

Synonyms

Saurophidium was named by Jourdan (1862). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pleurosaurus by Lortet (1892), Cocude-Michel (1963).

It was assigned to Pleurosauridae by Jourdan (1862); and to Acrosauridae by Osborn (1903).
Anguisaurus was named by Münster (1839).

It was synonymized subjectively with Pleurosaurus by Cocude-Michel (1963), Kuhn (1969).

It was assigned to Saurii by Meyer (1845); to Sauria by Quenstedt (1852); and to Acrosauridae by Osborn (1903).
