Simbirskiasaurus was named by Otschev and Efimov (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut].
It was synonymized subjectively with Platypterygius by Maisch and Matzke (2000); it was misspelled as Simbirshiasaurus by Sepkoski (2002), Fischer et al. (2014).
It was assigned to Ophthalmosauria by Motani (1999); to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Platypterygiinae by Fischer et al. (2014).
