Caypullisaurus was named by Fernández (1997) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Caypullisaurus bonapartei.
It was assigned to Stenopterygiinae by Fernández (1997), Fernandez (1998); to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Ophthalmosauria by Motani (1999), Fernández (2003), Druckenmiller and Maxwell (2010); to Platypterygiinae by Fischer et al.
