Tuarangisaurus was named by Wiffen and Moisley (1986) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp K Maes].
It was assigned to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Elasmosauridae by Wiffen and Moisley (1986), Carpenter (1999), Sachs (2005), Mateus et al. (2012), Otero et al. (2012), O'Gorman et al. (2017), Hiller et al. (2017), Otero et al. (2018); and to Weddellonectia by O'Gorman (2019).
It was assigned to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Elasmosauridae by Wiffen and Moisley (1986), Carpenter (1999), Sachs (2005), Mateus et al. (2012), Otero et al. (2012), O'Gorman et al. (2017), Hiller et al. (2017), Otero et al. (2018); and to Weddellonectia by O'Gorman (2019).

Maxillary teeth smaller, with 15 (estimated) alveoli present. Suture with premaxillary after 5th tooth. 19-20 dentary teeth. Mandibular symphysis short, extending back between 2nd and 3rd alveoli. Beak index short. No parietal foramen. Atlas/axis fused. |
