Pholidosauridae
Taxonomy
Pholidosauridae was named by von Zittel and Eastman (1902) [Also Williston 1902 mentioned as possible author]. Its type is Pholidosaurus. It was considered monophyletic by Jouve (2009), Fortier et al. (2011), paraphyletic by Bronzati et al. (2012).
It was reranked as the subfamily Pholidosaurinae by Nopcsa (1928); it was reranked as the unranked clade Pholidosauridae by Jouve et al. (2006), Fortier et al. (2011), Martin and Buffetaut (2012), Young et al. (2016), Souza et al. (2019).
It was assigned to Crocodili by Jaekel (1911); to Goniopholidiformes by Hay (1930); to Crocodilia by Delair (1958); to Metamesosuchia by Buffetaut (1982); to Mesosuchia by Kuhn (1946), Huene (1954), Kuhn (1966), Carroll (1988); to Goniopholidae by Nopcsa (1928), Martin and Buffetaut (2012); to Coelognathosuchia by Martin et al. ---|---|---|
D. Fortier et al. 2011 | Longirostrine mesoeucrocodylians distinguished by the possession of the following unambiguous synapomorphies: (1) anterodorsal margin of the external naris without the premaxillary dorsal projection; (2) the medial margin of the orbit is formed mostly by the prefrontal, with little or no participation of the frontal; (3) the fifth premaxillary tooth is anterolaterally placed in relation to the maxillary tooth row; (4) the posterior premaxillary teeth are longer then the anterior teeth; (5) the ventral edge of the premaxilla is located deeper than the ventral edge of the maxilla; (6) the distance between the tip of the snout and the anteriormost position of the premaxilla–maxilla suture in dorsal view is smaller than the distance between this and the posterodorsal extremity of the premaxilla (except in Elosuchus); (7) absence of postorbital–ectopterygoid contact; and (8) the maximal width of premaxillae is wider than the maximal width of the rostrum at the level of the fourth or fifth alveoli. |
