Alzadasaurus was named by Welles (1943) [Sepkoski's age data: K l K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 1069]. It is the type genus of Alzadasaurinae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Thalassomedon by Carpenter (1999).
It was assigned to Alzadasaurinae by Welles (1962); to Elasmosauridae by Welles (1943), Welles (1949), Carroll (1988); and to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
