Anthracotherium dalmatinum was named by von Meyer (1854). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mt. Promina, which is in an Eocene terrestrial horizon in the Promina Formation of Croatia.
It was recombined as Prominatherium dalmatinum by von Meyer (1854), Teller (1884), Grandi and Bona (2017).
