Trachichthyoides was named by Woodward (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Sant Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. Its type is Trachichthyoides ornatus.

It was assigned to Berycidae by Woodward (1902); to Holocentridae by Patterson (1964); to Trachichthyidae by Casier (1966); to Holocentroidei by Patterson (1993); and to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
