Taxonomy

Hoplopteryx was named by Agassiz (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno K Camp Sepkoski's reference number: 2,915].

It was assigned to Berycidae by Woodward (1902), Rapp (1946); to Trachichthyoidei by Patterson (1993); to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002); to Trachichthyidae by Patterson (1964), Applegate (1970), Bardack and Teller-Marshall (1982), Grandstaff and Parris (2016); and to Hoplopterygiidae by Amalfitano et al. (2020).
