Acrogaster was named by Agassiz (1839) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant K Camp-u Sepkoski's reference number: 863].

It was assigned to Trachichthyidae by Patterson (1964); to Trachichthyoidei by Patterson (1993); and to Beryciformes by Sepkoski (2002).
