Roloboceras transiens was named by Casey (1961). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Gurgy (d'Orbigny collection), which is in an Aptian marine horizon in the Argiles à Plicatules Formation of France.
It was recombined as Megatyloceras transiens by Bersac and Bert (2015).
