Lusitanichthys was named by Gavet (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. Its type is Lusitanichthys africanus.
It was assigned to Clupavidae by Cavin (1999); and to Gonorhynchiformes by Sepkoski (2002).
