Gyrosteus was named by Agassiz (1843) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar J Bath Sepkoski's reference number: 452,916]. Its type is Gyrosteus mirabilis.
It was assigned to Palaeonisciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Chondrosteidae by Agassiz (1889), Woodward (1895) and Hornung and Sachs (2020).
