Lophiomeryx gaudryi was named by Filhol (1877). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Raynal, which is in an Oligocene karst phosphorite in the Quercy Phosphorites Formation of France.
It was recombined as Cryptomeryx gaudryi by Schlosser (1886), Sudre (1984).
