Taxonomy
Africanacetus gracilis was named by Ichishima et al. (2017). Its type specimen is MN7492-V, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is São Paulo Ridge, which is in a Zanclean deep-water volcaniclastic in Brazil.

Ichishima et al. 2017 | Africanacetus gracilis differs from A. ceratopsis in: the skull being more gracile overall; the vertex of the skull being more twisted to the left; prominential notch lying at the same anteroposterior level as antorbital notch; rostral maxillary crest being lower; premaxillary crest consisting largely of the premaxilla with the protuberance of the nasal at its dorsomedial corner; maxilla expanding laterally from a point posterior to the middle of the rostrum until a point anterior to the prominential notch to increase the dorsal exposure of the maxilla lateral to the premaxilla; and lateral margin of the premaxillary sac fossa elevated from the neighboring maxilla. |
