Diagnosis
ReferenceDiagnosis
M. S. de la Fuente et al. 2017It is a pleurodire turtle because of the presence of a processus trochlearis pterygoidei in the skull and the attachment by sutures of the pelvic girdle to the shell. It is a Pan-Chelidae because of the presence of a second opisthocoelous, fifth bicon- vexe, sixth procoelous and a seventh biconcave cervical vertebrae in the neck. It differs from other known extant and extinct Pan-Chelidae taxa by its large size (carapace length be estimated in 950 mm) and by the unique combination of cranial and postcraneal characters such as: a cranial condylus mandibularis of the quadrate divided by a deep furrow in two slightly plane-convex surfaces that fit well with the concave articulation of the area articularis man- dibularis in the lower jaw; the narrow triturating surface of the dentary is limited laterally by a sharp and high labial ridge and by a medial, lower lingual ridge, both rami of the dentaries are fused at the mandibular symphysis where a hook is formed; at the tritu- rating surface of the symphysis a sharp ridge connects the labial and lingual ridges; the odd carapace bone series begins with a subpentagonal nuchal bone longer than wide with a slightly anterior indentation followed by a continued and incomplete neural series separated from suprapygal bone by the midline con- tact of costal 7 to 8; a long cervical scute is twice longer than wide; the vertebral 1 is the widest scute of the vertebral series; the marginal scutes 1 are quadrangular in outline, and represent the smallest scutes of the marginal series; the anterior plastral lobule is relatively short and wide, wider than the posterior one; the ante- rior plastral lobule width is more than twice its length, and shows a slight epiplastral notch; short epiplastral suture that represents 36 per cent of the entoplastron length; cuneiform short and wide mesoplastra without traces of a pectoroabdominal sulci are ar- ranged between the large hyo and hypoplastra; a curved lateral margin of the posterior plastral lobule that become slightly straight after a femoro-anal notch; the processes that bear the post- zygapophyses in the sixth procoelus cervical vertebra are extremely wide and extended beyond the posterior condyle, these processes have three longitudinal keels: one medial and two lateral separated by shallow troughs.
