Branchiosaurus darrahi was named by Romer (1939). Its type specimen is MCZ 1265, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Montrose, which is in a Pennsylvanian terrestrial shale in the Conemaugh Formation of Pennsylvania.
