Squalogaleus was named by Maisey (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l Sepkoski's reference number: 884]. Its type is Squalogaleus woodwardi.

It was assigned to Galeoidea by Maisey (1976); to Squalidae by Kriwet (2003); and to Squaliformes by Sepkoski (2002), Adnet et al. (2008).
