Protapirus gromovae was named by Biryukov (1972). Its type specimen is IZ AN KazSSR 1055-21/48-T, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ashut river ravine, which is in an Oligocene/Miocene terrestrial horizon in Kazakhstan.
