Staurosphaera was named by Haeckel (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-l R]. It is extant. Its type is Staurosphaera pusilla.

It was assigned to Actinommidae by Carter et al. (1988); and to Spumellaria by Sepkoski (2002).
