Monocostodus was named by Miller (1980) [Sepkoski's age data: O Trem-l O Trem-u]. Its type is Acodus sevierensis.

It was assigned to Protopanderodontidae by Sweet (1988); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
