Taxonomy
Nyctilestes serotinum was named by Marsh (1872) [genotype]. It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Grizzly Buttes, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was corrected as Nyctilestes serotinus by Marsh (1872), Hay (1902); it was recombined as Nyctitherium serotinum by Matthew (1909), Hay (1930), Robinson (1968), Gazin (1976), Krishtalka (1976).
