Agathis brevigongylodes was named by Hill et al. (2008) [Specimens examined: C-491, P-707, P-709, P-710, Lea-2299]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is P-710, a cuticle, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Pioneer, which is in an Oligocene/Miocene terrestrial siltstone in Australia.
