Taxonomy
Orthis musculosa was named by Hall (1857). It is the type species of Discomyorthis.

It was recombined as Rhipidomella musculosa by Clarke (1908); it was recombined as Rhipidomelloides musculosus by Amsden and Ventress (1963); it was recombined as Discomyorthis musculosa by Johnson (1970).
