Taxonomy
Thylamys pinei was named by Goin et al. (2000). Its type specimen is GHUNLP:un 2404, a mandible (right mandible fragment), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bajo Giuliani, which is in a Huayquerian loess siltstone in the Cerro Azul Formation of Argentina.

Goin et al. 2000Se diferencia del resto de las especies del género por la siguiente combinación de caracteres: molares inferiores con el paracónido y el metacónido muy próximos entre sí, hipoconúlidos cortos excepto en el m4, entocónidos bien desarrollados sobre todo en el mI, talónido del m4 comparativamente muy ancho y con el entocónido y el hipoconúlido bien desarrollados y separados entre sí.
