Gunnarella was named by Spjeldnaes (1957). Its type is Gunnarella delta.

It was reranked as Strophomena (Gunnarella) by Spjeldnaes (1957).

It was assigned to Strophomena by Spjeldnaes (1957); to Strophomenoidea by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Strophomeninae by Mitchell (1977), Williams et al. (2007).
