Holotype: UCMP 40199, a partial cranium with left I1-2, P2-4, M1-3 and right P3-4, M1-3, with a portion of the right premaxilla and the internasal margin of the right nasal Etymology: The species name is a combination of two greek components, platy, flat, broad, and gnathus, jawed
Taxonomy
Pericotoxodon platignathus was named by Madden (1997). Its type specimen is UCMP 40199, a partial skeleton (a partial cranium with left I1-2, P2-4, M1-3 and right P3-4, M1-3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP Locality V5043, La Venta Faun, which is in a Laventan terrestrial sandstone in the Villavieja Formation of Colombia.
