Taxonomy
Pericotoxodon platignathus was named by Madden (1997). Its type specimen is UCMP 40199, a partial skeleton (a partial cranium with left I1-2, P2-4, M1-3 and right P3-4, M1-3), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP Locality V5043, La Venta Faun, which is in a Laventan terrestrial sandstone in the Villavieja Formation of Colombia.

Madden 1997Pericotoxodon platignathus is distinct from other toxodontidae in having an adult mandibular ramus inferolaterally deepened beneath lower m2; buccolingually broad lower molar entolophids; individually variable (persistently bifurcate or simple) upper molar primary lingual enamel fold; very ephemeral upper molar accessory lingual enamel folds or fossettes; Upper M1 and M2 with distolingual enamel plication; Upper M3 distolingual fold variably present; ephemeral upper P4 lingual enamel fold; ephemeral lower molar accessory fossetid; buccolingually broad lower p2 talonid; nad persistently open m3 ento-hypoconulid fold.
