Taxonomy
Vampalus sayasanicus was named by Tarasenko and Lopatin (2012) [PIN, no. 5341, skeleton, including no. 5341/1, incomplete skull; no. 5341/2, left tym􏰀 panic bulla; no. 5341/3, right tympanic bulla; no. 5341/4, right petrosal; no. 5341/5, fragment of the right and left maxillae; nos. 5341/6, 7, left and right mandibular rami; nos. 5341/8–32, 39, 40, vertebrae; no. 5341/33, right humerus; no. 5341/34, left humerus; no. 5341/35, left radius; no. 5341/36, left scapula fragment; no. 5341/37, rib fragments; and no. 5341/38, left ulna]. Its type specimen is PIN 5341, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Saysaan, which is in a Miocene/Miocene marine horizon in the Russian Federation. It is the type species of Vampalus.
