Opisthotreta was named by Palmer (1954) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Dres-l]. It is not extant. Its type is Opisthotreta depressa.

It was assigned to Acrotretidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Acrotretida by Sepkoski (2002).
