Taxonomy
Tholodus was named by Von Meyer (1851). It is the type genus of Tholodontidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pessopteryx by von Huene (1951).

It was assigned to Tholodontidae by Kuhn (1966), Kuhn (1971); to Mixosauridae by McGowan and Motani (2003); and to Omphalosauridae by Maisch (2010).
