Taxonomy
Australerpeton was named by Barbarena (1998). It is not extant. Its type is Australerpeton cosgriffi. It is the type genus of Australerpetinae.
It was assigned to Platyoposaurinae by Schoch and Milner (2000); to Stereospondylomorpha by Schoch (2013); to Stereospondyli by Eltink and Langer (2014); and to Australerpetinae by Eltink et al. (2016).
