Ceramopora was named by Hall (1851). Its type is Ceramopora imbricata. It is the type genus of Ceramoporidae, Ceramoporinae.
It was assigned to Ceramoporinae by Utgaard (1968); to Cystoporata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ceramoporidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Jiménez-Sánchez (2009).
