Platonea was named by Canu and Bassler (1920) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Tubuliporidae by Bassler (1953), Lee et al. (1997), Gordon and Taylor (2015), Brezina et al. (2021) and Håkansson et al. (2024).
