Plagiophthalmosuchus gracilirostris
Taxonomy
Steneosaurus gracilirostris was named by Westphal (1961). Its type specimen is BMNH 14792 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Whitby, marine reptiles, which is in a Falciferum/Bifrons offshore shale in the Alum Shale Formation of the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Plagiophthalmosuchus.
It was recombined as Plagiophthalmosuchus gracilirostris by Johnson et al. (2020).

Pierce et al. 2009 | Steneosaurus gracilirostris is a long-snouted teleosaurid that differs from S. bollensis in having extremely elongated, very slender rostrum; large antorbital fenestra; relatively large ellipsoid orbit; small, rounded supratemporal fenestra; canial ornamentation reduced, including a smooth squamosal; small suborbital fenestra; palate forming median ridge accompanied by a paired lateral groove and c. 60 teeth on each maxilla and dentary; tooth crowns very slender, conical, pointed, and apically recurved. |
