Ptycholepis curtus was named by Egerton (1854). Its type specimen is BMNH P.6334, a partial skeleton, and it is a compression fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Lower Lias unspecified (BMNH), which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
