Leguminocythereis was named by Howe and Law (1936) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than Q Plei Sepkoski's reference number: 1066 Author: Howe 1936 in Howe and Law 1936]. It is the type genus of Leguminocythereidae.

It was assigned to Leguminocythereidae by Benson et al. (1961); and to Podocopida by Sepkoski (2002).
