R. E. Weems 2023 | Carapace shield shaped and flat with a well-developed sculptured pattern on the dorsal surface not attributable to nutrient foramina as in Lepidochelys. Sculpture composed of ridges and valleys; ridges irregular in middle of costals, trending anteroposteriorly at costal margins. Nutrient foramina are very fine and do not affect the course of the sculpture. Longitudinal keels on carapace variably developed, ranging from absent through medial keels on neurals to medial keels on neurals plus paralleling keels to either side on adjacent costals. All dorsal vertebral arches fused to their overlying neurals in adults, except the first, which is suturally attached throughout life. Rib necks are short. In very young individuals, peripherals probably sutured to the body of the carapace only by the nuchal; in older individuals, peripherals and costals meet suturally back at least to the eighth peripheral. Rib-free peripheral present between the sixth and seventh costals. At the posterior end of the carapace, the second suprapygal is separated from the pygal in juveniles but comes to abut against the pygal in older individuals, forming a posterior area of suturing that spreads anteriorly to include the eleventh peripherals. In older individuals, dorsal medial borders of the ninth and tenth peripherals grow inward to meet the costals and form suture contacts, leaving only two small fontanelles between the costals and the peripherals. Eight costals are always present, but eighth costal may split to form a supernumerary ninth costal. Eight neurals always present, but first occasionally is split to give the appearance of nine neurals. Two intercostal postneurals always present; a third appears if the eighth costal has an extra rib head or is split. Suprapygals lie entirely behind the last (eighth or ninth) costals. Normal pattern of five vertebral scutes (six if an extra postneural is present) and four pleural scutes; vertebral scutes twice as long as wide. |
