Taxonomy
Crocodilus hartti was named by Marsh (1869). Its type specimen is YPM 516, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Plataforma, which is in a Hauterivian/Barremian terrestrial conglomerate/shale in Brazil.

It was recombined as Goniopholis hartti by Mawson and Woodward (1907), Maury (1930); it was recombined as Sarcosuchus hartti by Buffetaut and Taquet (1977), Norell and Storrs (1989), Andrade et al. (2011), Bronzati et al. (2012).

E. Buffetaut and P. Taquet 1977Attribution of fossils (from Brazil) to Goniopholis are invalid. Similar to Sarcosuchus imperator, but new retention of specific name to reflect geographic location. Spatulate shape of the anterior extremity of the mandible, relative size of the alveoli, long mandibular symphysis, coarse ornamentation of the ventral surface of the bone.
