Eilenodon was named by Rasmussen and Callison (1981). Its type is Eilenodon robustus.
It was assigned to Sphenodontidae by Reynoso (2000); to Rhynchocephalia by Rauhut et al. (2012); to Opisthodontia by Cau et al. (2014); and to Eilenodontinae by Rasmussen and Callison (1981), Apesteguía and Novas (2003), Apesteguia et al. (2012), Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).

T. E. Rasmussen and G. Callison 1981 | Tooth implantation acrodont with new tooth addition at rear of tooth row just medial to low coronoid process. No evidence of replacement of preexisting teeth. Unworn cheek teeth with lateral crest and medial crest, and only slightly concave anteriorly. Bases and lower parts of crowns of teeth packed closely together. From posterior to anterior, tooth row curves slightly laterally then straightens toward mandibular symphysis. Dentary, surangular, articular and coronoid exposed on lateral surface of mandible. Mandibular foramen directed anteromedially from lateral surface of mandible. Articular surface of mandible, formed by articular and prearticular triangular when viewed from above; apex of triangle directed anteriorly |
