Peronopsis was named by Corda (1847). Its type is Axagnostus fallax.
It was assigned to Peronopsinae by Henningsmoen (1952) and Palmer (1954); to Quadragnostidae by Palmer and Gatehouse (1972) and Palmer and Halley (1979); to Peronopsidae by Robison (1995) and Whittington et al. (1997); and to Agnostida by Sepkoski (2002).
