Spirifer nucleolus was named by Kutorga (1842).
It was recombined as Notothyris nucleolus by Tschernyschew (1902), Keidel (1906), Broili (1922), Grabau (1931) and Chang (1987); it was recombined as Rostranteris nucleolus by Yanagida and Hirata (1969) and Glushenko (1975); it was recombined as Nordathyris nucleolus by Kotlyar (1989).
