Pleurocyon (Simidectes) was named by Stock (1933).

It was reranked as Simidectes by Gingerich (1982) and Carroll (1988).

It was assigned to Pleurocyon by Stock (1933); to Mesonychoidea by Gingerich (1982); and to Pantolesta by Carroll (1988).

Synonyms

Pleurocyon was named by Peterson (1919) [preoccupied by a synonym of Canis]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Petersonella by Kraglievich (1948); it was synonymized subjectively with Simidectes by Coombs (1971), Gustafson (1979) and Wilson and Stevens (1986).

It was assigned to Miacidae by Peterson (1919) and Stock (1933); and to Miacinae by Hooker (1986).
