Taxonomy
Paleophis virginianus was named by Lynn (1934). Its type specimen is USNM 13640, a set of vertebrae (vertebra), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Belvedere Beach, Eocene, which is in a Paleocene/Eocene coastal sandstone in Virginia.
