Umoonasaurus was named by Kear et al. (2006). Its type is Umoonasaurus demoscyllus.
It was assigned to Rhomaleosauridae by Kear et al. (2006); to Leptocleididae by Ketchum and Benson (2010), Benson and Druckenmiller (2014); and to Leptocleidia by Poropat et al. (2023).
