Ichthyosaurus nordenskioeldii was named by Hulke (1873). Its type specimen is SMNS 7631, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Cymbospondylus nordenskioeldii by Merriam (1908); it was recombined as Phalarodon nordenskioeldii by Merriam (1910), Nicholls et al. (1999), Maisch and Matzke (2000).
