Taxonomy
Leviathan melvillei was named by Lambert et al. (2010). Its type specimen is MUSM 1676, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Cerro Colorado (Pisco, Miocene), which is in a Tortonian coastal horizon in the Pisco Formation of Peru. It is the type species of Leviathan.
It was recombined as Livyatan melvillei by Lambert et al. (2010), Velez-Juarbe et al. (2015).
