Taxonomy

Ichthyosaurus extremus was named by Boulenger (1904).

It was synonymized subjectively with Aegirosaurus leptospondylus by Bardet and Fernandez (2000); it was recombined as Brachypterygius extremus by Huene (1922), Delair (1960), Fernandez (1997), McGowan (1997), Maisch and Matzke (2000), McGowan and Motani (2003), Maisch (2010), Fischer et al. (2013), Arkhangelsky and Zverkov (2014), Ji et al. (2016).

Synonyms

Grendelius mordax was named by McGowan (1976). Its type specimen is J68516, a partial skeleton (complete skull with some postcranial elements), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Great Ouse Flood Relief Channel at Stowbridge, which is in a Tithonian marine horizon in the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of the United Kingdom.

It was synonymized subjectively with Brachypterygius extremus by McGowan (1997); it was recombined as Brachypterygius mordax by McGowan (1976), Sander (2000), Maisch and Matzke (2000), Maisch (2010).
