Taxonomy

Temnodontosaurus platyodon was named by Conybeare (1822). It is not extant.

Synonyms

Temnodontosaurus risor was named by McGowan (1974). Its type specimen is BMNH 43971, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Lyme Regis, Lower Lias unspecified (BMNH), which is in a Sinemurian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.

It was synonymized subjectively with Temnodontosaurus platyodon by McGowan (1994).
Ichthyosaurus oligostinus was named by Hawkins (1840).

It was synonymized subjectively with Temnodontosaurus platyodon by McGowan and Motani (2003).

Matzke 2000	"Maxilla low, with straight suture to premaxilla, jugal and premaxilla not in contact, angular and surangular make up more than half of lateral mandibular surface, quadratojugal very high, contacts postfrontal, snout very long and slightly dorsally curved, teeth with mesial and distal carinae in adults, few notches in forefin."
