Prohysteroceras was named by Spath (1921) [Sepkoski's age data: K Albi-u].

It was assigned to Dipoloceratidae by Whitehouse (1926); to Mortoniceratinae by Förster (1975), Wright et al. (1996); and to Ammonoidea by Sepkoski (2002).
